Spinach??

Ever since the knee problem I have stuck with the Safeway deliveries. It's not that expensive and is one thing that I can do. I've had a couple of mishaps along the way. I didn't get a delivery once because of the storm and I've had a couple items missing. They credit you for missing stuff though so I can't complain too much about that (even though it's a bit inconvenient.)

The cool thing with Safeway is you can tell them how to substitute items. Basically it means if something is not in stock you can decide if you want something in it's place. For example, you order Tide soap...but they don't have it. You can indicate to substitute for the same brand but a different size OR you can substitute for a different brand same size. You can also tell them that you don't want a substitution at all if you have items you are particular about. All makes sense to me.

Today I had an interesting one. I ordered cilantro so I could whip up some guacamole for the super bowl. Apparently cilantro was not in stock. So, in it's place they substituted......spinach? How in the heck is spinach similar to cilantro? Ok, they are both green and leafy but I don't think that counts. Not sure how the guac is going to taste with diced up spinach in it.

La La Land

Those who know me know that I can have some amazing dreams. I guess those that don't know me just found out so now we're all on even ground. My dreams are very detailed and very long even though I know that dreams are actually a really short length of time.

In my dreams, I am never just walking around. Isn't that weird?! I figure I haven't been able to just walk around for over 3 months so really it makes sense but it's still weird to dream on crutches. Sometimes it's even a wheelchair....it is NEVER a walker. On the rare occasion that I do walk in the dream it is not without thought. Last night in my dream I was at a neighbors house that was doing yard work and he asked me to bring him something. I got halfway across the lawn and thought, "Oh no, I didn't get my crutches." Then I realized that I could walk without them and with very little awkwardness. So I continued on and then went right back and grabbed them so I could walk home. So weird. Sure will be nice when I don't dream on crutches.

Fortunes

Tonight Bill and I had Chinese food and I got a fortune that I had to think twice about. I really hate that. You get a fortune and you think Wow..this is going to be great! Then you think about it and realize it's not that good at all. (Sorry for the blurry picture, it's really hard taking pictures of fortunes!)

See, first you are thinking.....Great, I could really use some unexpected money! Then that word inherit started to sink in. Don't you usually inherit because someone dies? Well now, that doesn't seem like a good thing at all. I don't want someone to die just so I can get some unexpected money!

Not for the squeamish!

I wish I could report that the knee is feeling alot better but I'm sad to say it is not. I manage with the pain during the day, but I'm still having trouble sleeping. I'm logging in about 2 hours a night right now, and that is 20 minutes here...20 minutes there. I plan on calling the Dr. tomorrow to see if there is something we can do about the muscle twitches. I think I'd feel alot better if I could sleep some!

I got to unwrap the knee today. There was easily 3lbs of gauze and bandages on it. When you take it off you really expect to see a horrible sight, but I must say it's not to bad. Granted, it is swollen like a balloon and has cuts, but when you think of what they were able to do in those three cuts you have to give them credit. So, here's a picture of the post op leg. Those who are squeamish can shut there eyes right now....although you have to admit it's not terrible. Just really really big. I think there is a knee cap in there somewhere, but who knows..maybe they removed it!

Just when you think it's not too bad....

all things can change. Yep, it's me. I'm here post surgery to tell you that THE PAIN IS FREAKIN RIDICULOUS! I'm a pretty pain tolerant person but this is awful. I felt pretty good yesterday until roughly 8pm. Guess they were serious when they said that their "pain killers" were going to wear off in roughly 8-9 hours. It feels like someone hit me in the knee with a baseball bat and then pulled me down the street on my knee behind a truck. It's awful.

So, just when I thought I had felt the worst of it I was hit by a killer! In the middle of the night (two times mind you) I apparently got the leg twitches. The second time my knee actually popped and Bill pretty much had to remove me from the ceiling. After the second time I decided that sleeping was too scary.

I don't really know what they did in there. They were definitely fixing the meniscus, but he said there were some other things that he was going to "check out." I'm hoping that this pain doesn't last too much longer. I was told I needed to do these leg lift exercises, which basically consists of lifting my leg from the hip 20-30 times an hour. I'm lucky to get one of these in an hour. I was also told not to make any big decisions yesterday. I thought that was funny! Do people really leave surgery in that drugged out state and decide to, hmm I don't know, buy a car? Sell their house? My biggest decision was whether or not to take 1 or 2 Percosets for pain.

Under the knife!

I'm going under the knife today! It's been a long time coming and is scary and exciting at the same time. I really wish that I didn't have to have surgery to get better, but if it takes surgery to get better then I know it's something I must do. My surgery is at 11am and shouldn't take too long, hopefully! I'm not sure what state I will be in for the next day or so which may put the blogging on a hiatus. I will definitely do a quick post though by Saturday just saying hello and that everything went ok. Thanks to everyone for your well wishes and your prayers. They've kept me going this long, so keep them coming!

Grandma: A big thanks to you for putting me on the prayer list. I'm going to take the prayer cards with me today!

Here's a little video to take you all back and make you all smile while you think of me in surgery.

Sometimes things don't go as planned....

Since I finished my last big knitting project, it was time to start something smaller. I found a funny patter for an "Ice Cream Pint Cozy" so I thought I would give it a try. I'm sure you are shakin your head already. It's not that I need a cozy, in honesty I never get ice cream pints AND I never eat out of them. It just seemed really different from a hat or a scarf.

Let's start by saying that it was an easy pattern. Really just seemed like a hat with a flat bottom...no big deal. As I'm knitting this thing the two thoughts in my mind are A. This is the stupidest thing I will ever knit and B. This just doesn't seem right. I plug ahead though, determined to follow the pattern and finsh.
By the time it was finished it was very obvious that this was an awful pattern! What was supposed to be a cozy actually swallowed the pint when I put it in (and yes, I even had the right gauge) but this thing was huge. On top of that the bottom was shaped in a point! What the heck?
Lucky for me Becki was over with Weezie and Bowzer and this thing just seemed perfect for a Weezie hat. I added a neck tie string and put it on her and voila....instant Beagle Gnome! Unfortunately, but the look on her face, I don't think she was as excited as I was and probably won't be wearing her new hat.

Here we go again!

It's time for a knee update. My surgery is set and will take place this Friday. Since I'm having surgery this week I had to stop taking the Warfarin (blood thinner) for obvious reasons. Unfortunately they don't want to take me off thinners entirely, so.....I'm back on the Lovenox! For those that just tuned in, I will now have to give myself two shots a day again!! When the surgery is over I will be back at the lab everyday until my blood gets back in the theraputic range. What a bummer that is! Just when I thought I was getting over the needle trauma I'm right back in the thick of it. Well, I guess I will just keep thinking positive that the surgery is almost here and hopefully walking is soon to follow. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

So proud!!!

I finally knitted something for myself! For my birthday, my Mom got me some beautiful yarn for a scarf that I really wanted to make. It has a chevron pattern which was actually pretty easy other than the fact that you have to really keep track when doing a pattern. The scarf is approximately 8 feet long! It was supposed to be 10 feet, but I made the executive decision to make it shorter. I didn't want to risk it getting dragged on the ground alot. So with that extra yarn I got a groovy pattern from Becki and made a hat to go with it! I'm so proud of this one. It came out really good and I will be wearing it as often as I can!!

Babycakes

A new place has opened up called Babycakes, and it isn't for baby lovers. It's for cupcake lovers! Finally someone started up a cupcake shop in Sacramento and I have to say it's pretty darn good. They DEFINITELY take the cake on frostings...they are delicious. Sometimes the cake itself is a little dry, but overall I would give it a couple more tries! Lucky for me it's not too far from the house either so I'm sure I will be back. If you give it a try I HIGHLY recommend the Smores cupcake which was by far my favorite so far. Delish!

It's that time again!!!

Time for a National Day. Today is National Cheese Day! Cheese is probably one of my favorite things in the world. You could have a table of appetizers and I will go straight for the cheese. My two favorites are by far Brie and goat cheese. I remember as a kid telling my mom that Brie smelled like dirty socks and you must be crazy to eat it. Well, I must have been crazy not to and must have been been smelling way to many dirty socks. I'd love to say that I will be celebrating this day by eating a wheel of cheese, but the chances of that are slim. Hope everyone nibbles at list a little cheese today and you can also go and take a cheese quiz to test your knowledge. I'm apparently a decendant of cheese makers. I wish I knew that side of the family!

I got 6/10 right on Anne's Quiz on Cheese.
I was told: "You are descended from cheese makers."

Isn't that special?!

I must say that the "Special Day" turned out to be great!!! What started off ho hum with walker talk and painful physical therapy finished good with flowers and ice cream cake. Shortly after the flowers, my friend Kim came and picked me up to take me to lunch and for a pedicure. Pedicures are something I used to indulge in and I'd say that I would get one at least once a month. Unfortunately due to not driving and unbending knees I haven't been since a week before my wedding!!! It had been so long that was once a full polished toe, now looked more like a french manicure because it had grown out so much. The pedicure was great but there was definitely something that I noticed. If you go a long time without someone touching your feet they become EXTREMELY ticklish!! When she did the foot scrubber I pretty much crawled out of my skin. The poor woman, who was nervous enough when she saw the crutches, thought she was hurting me. Now, I'm happy to say that I have pretty toes!

After the big lunch and toe outing I came home and was shortly thereafter visited by my friend Kathy! She brought me the cutest gift. It was a drinking glass with a gnome on it and a candle inside. I just love gnomes.
Then Bill came home and in tow he had....drum roll please....an ice cream cake! Mint chip ice cream cakes from Baskin Robbins are my all time favorite so I could tell that the special day was rounding out pretty nicely. The night was finished up with pizza and ice cream cake. Only would have been topped perfectly if I could have had a beer with that pizza, but one can sometimes only wish!

Thanks everyone for making it a great birthday and the perfect example of a Special Day!!

My Special Day

Today is my special day. What does that mean....well it's my birthday. Whenever an eventful day comes up (Birthday, Valentines, Christmas, etc) it is given the name special day by Bill. I have to admit...I wasn't feeling all that special about my day. I knew that I wouldn't really be getting out and having a grand old time. To top it off I got told yesterday at physical therapy that it would be much better if I started using a walker instead of crutches. There is nothing that can make 32 feel like it's really old than being told that you need a walker! So, needless to say, I've been a little down in the dumps. Then the ding dong of the doorbell just went off and there was a guy holding flowers! My B sent me some flowers for my special day! It's amazing how special flowers can make you feel. Wow...I'm such a girl!

Oops, I did it again!

I bought something! It was something I really needed though...a new pair of slippers. I have an absolute favorite slipper that the Gap makes. It's kind of a slipper sock and they are warm and comfy. The pairs that I have (I have two by the way) are getting really worn in and well...kind of smelly! I only buy stuff from Gap on sale so I've been waiting for them to go on sale. Then what happens....they get sold out! Luckily I found them on Ebay and they were on sale there so I got them. They're a cute knitted style this year so I can't wait to get them and put them on.

Real Simple

Yesterday I bought a magazine at the grocery store. This was monumental because this is the FIRST magazine purchased since my no buying in November shopping clause. Since I made that vow I have really cut back on all spendings. Now granted, I can't drive or walk around to shop, but that doesn't mean I can't shop online. Overall, I'm really glad that I decided not to shop in November and that I've been able to keep my shopping at bay for quite some time now. I was little worried about my magazine purchase because it was the Real Simple 218 Best Buys issue. So not only was a buying a magazine, but I was buying a magazine that was recommending things to buy! I'm happy to say that there is not one thing in this magazine that I will buy. It was fun to flip through, but I don't even have a desire to buy another magazine. What has happened to me? I thought it would be fun to give you a summary of the things I have purchased since my no shopping vow. I'm not including Christmas, but will say that I kept it VERY simple.

First real purchase (aside from the cane that I bought a long time ago): Yarn at Michaels. I spent roughly $120 at Michaels on yarn. I've been knitting ALOT so this meant that my yarn supply was getting really low. I stocked up good and shouldn't have to buy yarn again for a very long time.

Second purchase: Target. Yes, I finally broke down and went to Target for things for myself. I did make a Target trip for Christmas, but I made a list then and got exactly what was on that list...not one thing for myself. This time I went in with a list again and bought only what was on the list. I spent $240 this time, but got an end table, lamp, pillows, heating pad and quite a bit more so it was a good deal.

Third purchase: Gifts for Bill for his birthday. I'm not sure if these count or not, but I spent about $200.

Fourth purchase: The Stamina pedals for my physical therapy. This was probably my most exciting purchase! Can't wait to get these!!

Fifth purchase: Real Simple magazine

There you have it. Since I got back from my honeymoon, which was really when the no shopping spree started I have spent under $600. I also do not have a desire to start shopping. No yearnings for Target. No sneaking things in at Oldnavy.com. This is not to say that I won't shop again, but I must say that I think about my purchases now before I make them AND I keep track of them. I think I get a pat on the back.

A little help from a friend.....

As you heard before my favorite thing at the physical therapist was the bicycle. I was pretty bummed because I have no cycle at home, and would only be able to bike twice a week. Then I got a little help from a friend. My friend Johnna recommended an item at Walmart.com that I might be interested in. It's called the Stamina In-Stride cycle, which is basically just a set of pedals that you can use with any chair, couch, etc. Needless to say I ordered it for myself in less than 1 minute! I won't be receiving it for about a week, but I can't wait to try it out. There's also some other funny information that I should share. I'm getting a bunch of help from Johnna's these days. Not only is my friend with the good advise named Johnna...but so is my physical therapist! So, thanks to Johnna I will be walking smoothly in no time. Thanks Johnna!

Meet Mr. Crutchstachio

Last night was our annual work Winter Party. This is basically our Christmas Party, but since it's not PC to celebrate Christmas we call it a winter party. Oh, and it's in January. I must admit though I like it in January. Seems like all the holiday hub-ub is over and there is alot more free time. The theme of the party this year was a western theme. I did my best to western-ize myself and gimped my way in. To keep with the moustache theme, my crutches got a set and became Mr. Crutchstacio.

Overall it was a good time. I had to sit around and wasn't able to drink, but still was good. I also almost fell hard on the dance floor trying to do a crutch shuffle...how embarrassing. I should just stick to the sofa!

Tortured!

I'm doing really good at growing my hair out. Aside from getting a trim and cutting some bangs I haven't given up and chopped it all off yet. This has become increasingly hard with all the adorable bob/a-line haircuts. Those who have known me for a long time know that I have rocked the a-line haircut more than anything else. I'd always look at girls with long hair and "long" to have my hair that way but when I would try to grow it out it never quite made it past my shoulders. Now that I am finally succeeding at the grow out, what comes along but the a-line hair cut! It's really hard to want to grow it out when I see all these cute cuts, but I will persevere. As soon as I get mine long and cut it off again, long hair will come back in style and I'll be stuck in the "out of style" rut!!!

Knee Update

Have another update for you all. It's been four weeks since my last appointment with the orthopedic surgeon so yesterday I was set to get more xrays to see how the leg is coming along and whether or not the surgery on the 25th is going to happen. Luckily the xrays all looked very good which means that I can start putting weight on the leg, about 50% body weight to be exact. Unfortunately the leg has been immobile for so long that I can't move it like a normal leg so it's hard to put weight on it. The surgery is still "tentative" at the moment because I have too little mobility and too much swelling. For the next week I have to do some physical therapy and then give the Dr. an update next week where we will determine if I will have the surgery now or not.

Today I had my first physical therapy appointment. I have to admit that I was scared to death and almost cried at a point today just imagining the worst. I figured I was in for some bad stuff and would feel like my leg was being ripped off. Boy, was I wrong! The therapist was amazing and it felt so good to move my leg around. She gave me some great exercises to do and I was actually able to bend my leg an extra 13 degrees just in one visit. Now I have to keep it up at home and then go back a couple times next week. My favorite part was the stationary bike. I WISH I had one at home soo bad that I could sit on. It felt the best!!

There you have it for now. I'll keep you posted again next week!

Happy Birthday B!

I hope you have a good one and get everything your heart desires! Sorry you aren't getting the boob cake!

New Furniture

Cokeley was nice enough to hand us down some of her furniture. Our couches were getting a bit shabby so we couldn't pass up the offer for a newer hardly used sofa and ottoman. We put them in the house last weekend and I have to say I LOVE how they look. It is less bulky than our original sofa and the lighter color really brightens the room. I also love the ottoman. It is very bulky, but makes a great seat whenever guests come over. Thanks Cokeley! Oh, by the way, that would be Kim. She has two nicknames, one is Sprout which I have used for years and the other is Cokeley which was given to her by Bill. Don't even ask!

I have a dirty mind.

As I posted a while back, one of the things that I really wanted on my Amazon wishlist was the large cupcake pan. Lucky for me I got one from my Mom for Christmas. It came in the mail last week and I have to admit one of the first things I thought was, "Damn...this would make a good boob cake!" I know, you are thinking how an innocent cupcake cake becomes a boob cake. It's easy, the top of the cupcake is shaped like a boob and has a cherry on top which resembles a nipple. Well, it would if it was frosted right. Bake two, and voila......instant rack! There are some friends bdays coming up and someone is getting a boob cake for sure!

Ha!

I love how this covers my face. It really makes it appear that here is this helpless guy that really should have read this magazine before he said "I do" to the unknown girl in the white dress. He he! Hopefully Bill read the issue.

Everyone knows it's windy...........

Stormwatch '08 has come to an end and now it should be called Repairwatch '08. This was a doosey of a storm and there are still thousands of people without power. I can't imagine being without power since Friday!! The winds were crazy during the storm and it did a bunch of damage. I finally got out on Saturday and driving down the streets was like a war zone. Downed trees everywhere! We made out lucky in this storm for sure. Tons of people in our neighborhood lost power. We only didn't get a Safeway delivery and lost cable for a couple days. So now that the storms are over the news reports all day on people without power, tree clean up and flooding. The fun never ends with the news!

Lock up the windows!

It's Storm Watch 2008! Not to be confused with the Storm Watch that we had in 2007. No, this watch is bigger and better. It will dominate all local tv stations for at least an extra 4 hours. It will show you wind, it will show you rain...it may even show you a levee or two.

Ok, enough playing around. There is a storm and for the first time this year it may actually turn out to be a whooper. So far it is definitely raining, and the wind gusts are sometimes in the 60 miles per hour range. Last night the wind started and it sounded like waves crashing in the shore. I went into a little post traumatic stress flashback but woke up this morning and was ok. So, what does all this storm mean to me? Sitting on the couch and being happy that I'm not out in it. What is also means is that Safeway called and my delivery today is cancelled due to weather! I'm also going to have to get up after each gust just to be sure that our fence doesn't come down. If there was ever a storm that could do it..this is the one.

Knitting Update

I have definitely been spending a whole lot of my time off knitting. I have started to really enjoy it. I actually look forward to starting up a new project so I can see how it looks when it's finished. So far I have finished 4 scarves and two hats!! On my "To Do" list is a backpack, ice cream pint cozies, two scarves and perhaps another hat. Ambitious? Yes, but I also have another two months!! Here is a picture of the hat I just finished for Bill. I hope that he likes it!
Pardon the non make-up wearing photo where I look the color of Casper the Ghost. I need some sun apparently, or better photography lighting!

Give me a break Clark!

I have to say that my annoyance started sometime at Christmas time with this issue. It's not really an issue...just something that the news kept reporting on over and over again through the holiday season, and no this time it wasn't the weather. It was LED Christmas lights. I'm all for green and think it's great that these lights are available now, but I don't think it is news worthy for weeks and weeks. My annoyance hit an all time high last night. Every time you turned on a Times Square countdown it was all about the new and improved energy efficient ball. The ball this year was powered with LED lights which was equivalent to the energy use of 10 toasters. Does anyone see how ridiculous this is? They are in Times Square for gosh sake?! That whole street probably has enough illuminated signs to run electricity in my house for a year! Not only that, but this ball cost a mere 1 MILLION dollars! Sorry the city of New York, but I am not impressed by your LED bulb. I'd be more impressed if you maybe used 99% of the money that you just paid for a stupid ball that lasts one day on something more meaningful!!
