Message Board Tutorial

Remember this?I had all these good intentions of going and getting a new mirror. Well, that never happened! Then I got to thinking I'd just get rid of the frame. I only spent a dollar on it and didn't want to spend $20 more to put new mirror in. Then I got another idea. Turn it into something else!

To get started I got some simple supplies together: cardboard, scissors, hot glue gun and ribbon.I used the old mirror backing to measure out the oval on a piece of cardboard and cut it out. I used a thick refrigerator box for this.Once this was cut I lay it on top of an old table cloth that I also got for $1 at a thrift store. It had a couple marks on it so I always knew I'd only use some of it. I then started hot gluing the fabric to the cardboard, doing the top and the bottom first to keep the table cloth from sliding around. When the fabric was glued down I cut the excess fabric off as close to the hot glue as I could. Now you could stop here and just make it a tack message board, but I wanted to do one with ribbons. So, I lay out some pieces of ribbon in the rough pattern that I wanted on the front. Then I glued down one end of each ribbon so it would stay in its place. I flipped the oval over and glued down each ribbon to the back.On the front side I put a dot of glue under each place where the ribbons crossed so my items would have some support and not just slide down the ribbons. Now, I decided that it wasn't done yet and last minute threw some fabric covered buttons at each cross section.I attached it back to the frame and hung it proudly on my wall!A super cute shabby chic message board that cost me under $5 to make!

Dang, you're amazing! Kim and I have to get started on some projects. I always have to have at least one going at once. I bought a stepping stone kit last week. The last one I made turned out cute. But you missy? Creativity and beyond. I'm a good copier. You on the other hand are a designer. My friend, Jennifer, is just getting ready to have her knitting book published. I'll let you know when it's available. She too is a designer. I love your blog!

You made that look so easy, I KNOW if I did that it would not be so great! Perhaps I will try! =)
